Boxed Flinders Compass

This style of compass takes its name from Captain Matthew Flinders, the British explorer and cartographer who led the first circumnavigation of Australia in the early 1800s. During his voyages, Flinders studied how a ship’s iron hull could affect a compass’s accuracy. His research led to the development of the Flinders bar — an iron correction device mounted beside the compass to counter magnetic interference — a major innovation in naval navigation.

The modern Flinders Compass celebrates that legacy.

  • Made from solid brass with a bronzed finish and bevelled-edge glass face
  • It features a freely rotating floating card that aligns with Earth’s magnetic field, always orienting itself to north. Simply place it on a flat, level surface and watch it settle to show north and south.

Though we now navigate by satellites and screens, finding direction in life is still not always easy.  The compass reminds us that we each have our own true north and will find our way through change, uncertainty, and new beginnings.  It’s a thoughtful gift for anyone re-orienting themselves after or before a big change; farewells, a graduation, new job, wedding...or divorce.

And beyond its symbolism, it’s very cool to hold something that works by the same invisible magnetic forces that guided sailors centuries ago — a quiet reminder that some truths never change.
