Small sized Gladstone bag. Made by Westralian Leather Goods Ltd a Perth based firm active from 1923 through to the end of the 1930's.
- Stamped to base with the makers details plus 'Solid Leather' and '14'
- Dark brown leather textured to look like crocodile skin
- Metal frame with attached leather handle, metal loop clasps at either end and a two sided push button clamp with central lock (for which the key is missing)
- The sides off the bag have a hinged metal frame that can be locked into an open position so it is easy to access the bags contents
- The cotton fabric lining is intact but badly stained
The bag has been well made. The leather is thick and the base has five metal studs to keep it protected from scuffing when placed down. The sides of the bag with the hinged section of the frame have been reinforced towards the bottom with four metal studs and piping along the sides. There are only a few spots, on some of the corners and curves, where the leather has scuffed a touch.
CONDITION
- Clasp and hinged frame work smoothly but the key for the lock is missing and the metal parts have surface rust (these would clean up reasonably well with steel wool for a quick fix, however the clasps and closures were orginally chromed)
- The lining, while intact, is very stained
- The leather is in excellent condition given it was made in the 1920's, there is small areas of scuffing along some of the edges and corners
DIMENSIONS
The base measures 18 x 34 cm. The bag is 16 cm tall (excluding the handle and frame) with a boxy shape.
